Organic clothing consists of materials that are free of pesticides. For example, in order to produce cotton, an estimated 53 million pounds of pesticides, herbicides, and defoliants are used every year. Organic cotton uses natural pest deterrents like ladybugs. Additionally, farmers handpick the pests off the plants. The resulting process is more labor-intensive and makes for a more expensive fabric.
Although organic cotton makes up just 10 percent of the cotton market worldwide, the demand from consumers is growing. Today, organic cotton is mainstream in the clothing industry. Companies such as Nike, Patagonia, Levi's, and Timberland have lines of organic clothing – and their lines are selling.
